The Research Data Analyst will act as a “Data Wrangler”, working on all things data related for the Analytics Center of Excellence: data selection, data preparation, data governance, and data analysis.

The incumbent is responsible for supporting the research division by preparing data to build models from. This person will also be responsible for exploring a range of public databases for information and insight, either on a stand-alone basis or to support research projects. They will be looking for data that can be combined with existing LIMRA data for enhanced insight (for example with Life and Annuity Compass). They will work closely with IT to help design, implement, and maintain a data governance strategy. This person will also mine and combine existing LIMRA data to uncover new findings.

The successful incumbent must be able to:

  • Identify data sets that could be useful for modeling, both internal and external
  • Clean data sets to prepare for modeling
  • Serve as a SME/steward for recurring data collections
  • Manage the importing of large data sets for the purposes of mining
  • Build out metadata repository which documents and catalogs data assets
  • Maintain governance of data sets that are used by researchers
  • Do data mining/basic analysis of data sets using various statistical methods
  • Teach others how to work with data so they can self-serve
  • Perform other duties as assigned
A successful incumbent must have:
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively 
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM major or equivalent experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with SQL or Microsoft Access

  • Curiosity to find deeper meaning in data
Preferred:
  • Familiarity with data governance initiatives. Including building a data catalog, capturing metadata, and ensuring proper stewardship of data
  • Familiarity with various data formats
  • Experience with SAS code and software
  • Experience with predictive modeling or other analytics techniques
  • Knowledge of insurance/financial services industry
