We are seeking a Principal Software Developer for our Application Development team, to help identify, design, build, and support web-enabled and artificial intelligence solutions that create measurable value across the organization and for our members.

This role will work closely with business leaders, product teams, technology teams, and other stakeholders to implement best-in-class applications as well as identify opportunities where AI can improve internal processes, enhance employee productivity, and create new or improved member-facing capabilities. The Principal Software Developer will help translate business challenges into practical solutions and will play a hands-on role throughout the lifecycle (from ideation and prototyping to implementation, adoption and support).

The ideal candidate combines strong software engineering and AI expertise with excellent communication, curiosity, and business acumen. This person should be comfortable working directly with business stakeholders who may be early in their AI journey, helping them understand what is possible, determining where AI is and is not the right solution, and guiding ideas from concept to production.

Responsibilities

What You Bring:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• 4+ years of demonstrated experience designing, developing, and deploying AI or machine-learning solutions in a production environment.
• 5+ years of strong experience with engineering tools (Git, DevOps, VSCode etc.), programming languages (C#, Python, JavaScript) and environments (Azure/AWS).
• 4+ years of hands-on experience developing applications using large language models and generative AI.
• 4+ years of experience designing and implementing Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions.
• 4+ years of experience with cloud-based AI platforms such as Microsoft Azure AI Foundry, Amazon Bedrock, or comparable technologies.
• 5+ years of demonstrated software engineering practices, including source control, testing, CI/CD, APIs, cloud development, and application support.
• 5+ years of developing and utilizing patterns and leveraging industry best practices.
• Experience with vector databases, embeddings, semantic search, and enterprise knowledge retrieval.
• Demonstrate advanced business and technical acumen for applications.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex AI and technical concept to non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to work directly with business stakeholders to understand problems and develop technology-enabled solutions.
• Strong consultative mindset and the ability to guide stakeholders from an initial idea through solution definition and implementation.
• Ability to evaluate business cases and estimate value and risk.
• Ability to operate effectively in situations where requirements may initially be ambiguous or evolving.
• Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work across business, product, data, security, architecture, and technology teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building AI-powered conversational applications, copilots, assistants, or agentic AI solutions for externally facing audiences.
• Experience guiding business stakeholders through the adoption of AI and emerging technologies, including change management, user enablement, communication, and ongoing solution refinement.
• Experience working in the insurance, financial services, association, research, education, or professional services industries is a plus.
• Experience working within Agile delivery frameworks (Scrum preferred).
• Experience with automated builds and deployments (CI/CD).
• Experience with automated testing (UI, TDD, Integration etc.).
• Champions and provide guidance with an innovative mind set to deliver product solutions.

A successful Principal Software Developer will be someone who can sit with a business leader, understand a problem that may initially have little technical definition, determine whether AI can meaningfully improve it, and then take ownership of turning that opportunity into a secure, practical, and supportable solution.
